Whitewater fun
Take our progressive paddling lessons, then practice on some of Western Canada's most beautiful rivers and streams. We offer skill-building pool clinics over the winter to keep you ready to go. Our guides are skilled whitewater river kayakers, certified through Canoe Kayak Canada to bring their wealth of knowledge to the kayaking programs.
Pool Kayaking (Winter)
Learn the basics of whitewater and/or sea kayaking and practice your rolling skills to be ready to hit the waves next spring. Our winter courses are run in the comfort of the University of Calgary pool, and our experienced instructors look forward to getting you on the water.
Intro to Whitewater Kayaking
This two-hour introductory course provides everything you need to begin your whitewater kayaking journey. Start with an overview of essential paddling gear before moving on to hands-on skills including kayak entry, wet exits, and self-rescue techniques. Learn basic paddling strokes and fundamental boat control in calm water, building confidence and comfort ahead of the summer.

Sea Kayak Intro
This fun 1.5-hour intro will give you a basic understanding of the skills required to safely manoeuvre a sea kayak on flatwater. We'll cover essential equipment, getting in/out of your kayak, wet exits, and simple stroke development - all in the comfort of the UCalgary indoor pool.
Whitewater Kayak Roll Introduction
A kayak roll is an essential skill to learn once you have mastered the basics and it will increase your confidence on the river. In this course, receive step-by-step instruction to help you complete your first roll in the safety and warmth of the UCalgary pool.
Prerequisite: Intro to Whitewater Kayaking or equivalent.
