Mountaineering

Take your climbing skills higher and farther with a mountain ascent. Our mountaineering programs will introduce you to the alpine world of rock and ice with roped travel. Our ACMG-certified guides can teach you the basics on our introductory programs or guide you up the mountain of your dreams on a custom expedition.

Mountaineering

Mountaineering programs teach you to ascend peaks using a variety of rock, snow, and ice movement skills. Start with our Intro to Mountaineering to learn the fundamental skills, then practice with guided ascents of classic Rocky Mountain peaks.

3-day Intro to Glacier Mountaineering

Our 3-day introductory course will teach you the skills required to access and ascend many of the glaciated peaks in the Canadian Rockies. Learn fundamental travel skills including movement on snow and ice, self-arrest and rescue skills, anchor-building, and risk management in the alpine environment. To reinforce this technical instruction, there will be an opportunity for a guided glacier tour or ascent of a peak near the Columbia Icefields Centre.

Scrambling

Scrambling involves movement over dry rock that requires the use of hands to ascend, but (mostly) does not require rope protection. Scrambling peaks range from steep hikes with a couple balance moves to committing paths involving consistent hands-on movement, significant exposure (airy drops), and careful routefinding demands to avoid more technical terrain. Our programs will teach you the skills required to get up - and back - safely.

Take your hiking skills to the next level and learn techniques to safely ascend more challenging peaks. Spend a day on a low-risk Rocky Mountain scramble learning the techniques and equipment used while attempting to reach the summit. This is the perfect introductory course for people looking to get off the trail and try more challenging routes. You'll learn hazard recognition and management, ongoing navigation skills, efficient movement, and more.

Crevasse Rescue

If your backcountry travels take you onto a glacier, it’s important to be able to recognize hazards and travel appropriately to minimize risk. Learn to identify when to rope up, the skills to safeguard your group from crevasse hazard, and how to perform a rope rescue.

This 1-day program teaches the equipment and techniques used in crevasse rescue for general mountaineering applications. We teach at a Bow Valley site that will permit practice of essential travel skills as well as basic rescue systems. You will learn fundamental crevasse rescue skills including navigation and travel, rope management, self- and partner-rescue techniques, and hauling systems.
